Ultra Clear Glass (Starphire) Information

Ultra Clear Low Iron Glass is one way to get all the benefits, durability and usability of a glass aquarium with the clarity of acrylic aquariums for those who can afford it. Low Iron glass is practically colorless without the green tint associated with standard float glass. Standard float glass edges are dark green when viewed from the side, whereas, low iron glass edges are light blue in color. Standard float glass has a green tint that is most notable in thickness of ½” or higher or in laminate glass. Ultra Clear Low iron glass (starfire) is usually used on the front glass if that is the only side that will be viewed or front and end panels if three sides can be viewed. Low Iron Glass is known under the brand names of PPG Starphire, Guardian UltraWhite, SSG Diamant and Pilkington Optiwhite. Finally, most consumers with aquariums that have ½” glass thickness or less will not see a significant difference. Low iron glass will not improve aquarium system performance or success. Ultra Clear Glass is on the left side.
